God has had everything planned for the Gables’ lives since before time, but He arranged for them to meet when they were nine and eleven years old. Tommy and Linda had always been best friends, like brother and sister growing up.
In 1973 Linda invited Tommy to church, and the Lord radically revealed Himself and completely transformed Tommy’s life! Tommy then began to encourage Linda’s walk with the Lord. In 1974, they fell in love and got married in Alaska. They attended Bible college in Anchorage and were sent out in 1977 to start a church in Boone, NC, which is now called Living Water. Thus began their ministry as church planters.
In 1984 the Gables went with their five children to Boca Raton, FL to start a second church. In 1988, they moved once again to Charlotte to pastor a small new church plant. Tommy and Linda turned that new church plant over to Kelvin Smith in 1995-96, which is now Steele Creek Church of Charlotte. God then sent the Gables to Asheville, NC, where God birthed New Song Church of Asheville in 1999.
In Asheville, a new season opened in their lives as a local mission group asked Tommy to come and baptize and marry people on their trip to Nicaragua in 2002. The spiritual poverty there grabbed Tommy’s heart, and he took Linda to visit Nicaragua only two months later. In the next five years, Tommy and Linda traveled 18 times to Nicaragua, helping start a church in a large, very poor village of sugar cane workers. This church worshiped under a tent on dirt situated between shacks made of plastic and tin where many new devoted believers worshiped with a passion rarely seen in the States!
In 2004, they purchased land, by the favor of the Lord, through Samaritan’s Purse and then registered New Song as a non-profit in Nicaragua. A mission began to grow up around them! By 2007, the Gables KNEW that God had called them to sell everything and move full-time to Nicaragua. Tommy has been training the pastors who oversee the central church in Candelaria and sending them out to start new churches in rural areas. There are presently three outreach churches (Santa Matilde, Nuevo Amanecer, and La Isla) growing under their care. Linda has been working in the areas of pure water, health, education, small businesses and administration. God has sent some incredible young people from the States who are handling the finances, youth and children’s ministries, as well as blessing New Song with a devoted Nicaraguan staff. Working together the New Song staff is seeing the blessing of the Lord over their ministry..
